Floor Drain Cover & Trench Drain Grate

JW Investrade Inc who owns MetalGrating.ca, produces Floor Drain Covers and Trench Drain Grates that sustain high static and dynamic loads of vehicles moving through these structures in factories, shops, warehouses, garages and parking lots.

Floor Drain Cover by MetalGrating

Due to the aging infrastructure floor drain cover fail under the impact and weight of forklifts, heavy trucks, earth moving equipment, and cranes. The great majority of floor drain covers are made from gray cast iron or ductile cast iron. They are excellent until they are not. After 40-50 years of great service they finally give up. If you have an open basin or damaged floor drain cover like the photos below send us a photo for a quote.

  • Rated for half axle static load and high dynamic load
  • Will sustain braking and turning
  • Will fit your drain or basin
  • Any shape, any size, any load
  • Flush with concrete surface
  • Hot deep galvanized after fabrication
  • Produced in Lucan, Ontario and shipped across Canada and to US

40%-60% discount on replacement of old cast iron floor drain or basin

The discount applies to following floor drain covers or floor basin lids:

  • garage drain cover / garage floor basin lid
  • factory drain cover / factory floor basin lid
  • warehouse drain cover / warehouse floor basin lid
  • shop drain cover / shop floor basin lid
  • parking lot drain cover / parking lot basin lid

How we can afford this discount?

The traditional replacement of broken old cast iron floor drain cover involves also replacement of the concrete drain’s column itself. Since the cast iron floor drain cover is embedded to the concrete. However, we do not do that. If the concrete drain is in good shape, we replace only what is broken, we simply replace floor drain cover. Although, some minor concrete work is sometimes necessary. That can be accomplish by local concrete contractor or by us. Therefore, you will save quite a bundle by purchasing our product.

The traditional replacement of concrete drain with cast iron floor drain cover ranges from $12,000 to about $18,000. It involves use of heavy equipment and 2 – 4 days of crew if the things go smoothly. Our steel drain covers cost from $4,800.00 to $7,200.00. The small drain covers with smaller load are less expensive. The larger drain covers tolerating higher loads cost more. Obviously, there is some small concrete work there pending the style of your drain or basin. This is expected and the cost of minor concrete work is about 20% which is from $2,400.00 to $3,600.00

Why you can’t get your size of floor drain cover made from cast iron?

Chinese production dominates the cast iron floor drain covers with their standard sizes. If your floor drain cover is out of their standard, you are out of luck. The floor drain cover must fit your drain precisely. Chinese manufacturers mass produce decent quality cast iron drain covers for highways and roads. Unfortunately, they will not produce custom size floor drain cover just for you. However, MetalGrating will fabricate the one for you that will fit precisely to the opening of your drain or basin.

Is there any additional hidden replacement cost of floor drain cover?

As mentioned above, the traditional replacement involves the use of heavy equipment for 2-4 days on your site. Well, you will have multiple crew construction site for 2 – 4 days on your floor. If of course everything goes smoothly. But, it doesn’t have to go smoothly. The additional cost includ lost production on factory floor for 2- 4 days. And, perhaps forklifts can’t pick the loads in the warehouse for 2-4 days. Or cars and trucks can’t park for 2-4 days, and shop can’t operate for 2-4 days. How much does it cost?

MetalGrating sends 2 crews to your location in Ontario. We accomplish the installation within 1 day, in fact in matter of hours. However, you will have to pay for travel from Lucan. In fact, we place the new floor drain cover within a few hours. At present time, we do not offer installation services outside Ontario.

What else can’t go not so smoothly?

The traditional replacement of drain column can disturb or damage the horizontal connections of your facilities drainage system. If your operation is located in old infrastructure, such damages or repairs will cause a dent in your annual budget. The same scenario can happen in new facilities due to thin walled casted concrete drainage or operator’s mistake or negligence.

The additional risks involved with traditional replacement of drain column relates directly to the use of heavy equipment in often congested workspace. Hazards such as concrete dust, noise, and lack of ventilation come to mind first. And then, damages to your facilities come next when heavy equipment operates in congested space.

MetalGrating crew bring only hand tools and we do not disturb drain column.

Trench Drain Grate for Vehicular Traffic from MetalGrating

Your trench grate is design for people to stand on it and it is failing because vehicles drive on it. We at MetalGrating division of JW Investrade Inc. produce improved welded trench drain grate for vehicular traffic that tolerates the static and dynamic loads coming from multiple angles onto the trench. Our trench drain grate tolerates well stopping on the trench drain grate and turning on the trench drain grate.

MetalGrating improves Trench Drain Grate

MetalGrating improves Trench Drain Grate by

  • Exceeding significantly NAAMM standard rating for vehicular traffic due to multidirectional traffic, stoppage, and turns
  • Placing large welds on both sides of the load bearing bar at the banding bar ( for all size of trenches and driveways)
  • Place much thicker 2 banding bars along the length of the panel ( for all size of trenches and driveways)
  • Place crossbars at the bottom of the panel ( box effect to mimic swaged grating for trenches wider than 18″) that prohibits excessive transverse bow leading to panel collapse
  • Produce in Lucan, shipped across Canada and to US.

Trench drain grate indutstry

The vehicles drive on tranches in multiple directions, vehicles stop on trenches and vehicles turn on trenches. Based on our experience the most damages on trench drain grate are caused by heavy forklifts turning their back whiles while standing on serrated trench drain grating.

The most popular material for fabricating trench drain grate is welded bar grating that is rated for static loads since it should be used for mezzanines and catwalks. The industry uses product designed for pedestrians for vehicular application because is relatively inexpensive to make. Welded bar grating has dominated the market for trenches in factories, warehouses, shops, and underground garages. The other much better materials such as rivetted grating and swaged grating is much too expensive to use on trenches and uncomfortable to customize for trench size. Additionally, it is very difficult to obtain them in relatively reasonable time frame since not many manufactures run production lines with it. Both rivetted grating and swaged grating are custom produced per specific project.

This is the reason why at MetalGrating we improve welded bar grating for trench drain grate for vehicular traffic

Reasoning for trench drain grate improvement

Here is Trench Drain Grate sketch. Traffic along the trench causes transverse bow and damages the banding bar. The traffic across the trench causes longitudinal bow and damages the load bearing bars. Multidirectional traffic on the trench causes both bows.

The load bearing bars are position across the width of the trench and the crossbars are positioned along the length of the trench. The panel is framed by two banding bar and two rim bars. The longest structural element of the Trench Drain Grate are 2 banding bars located along the length of the panel.

Most common questions regarding MetalGrating’s improvements

The most common questions regarding our improvements relate to the NAAMM standards, size and location of welds, and thickness of banding bar.

How much MetalGrating exceeds NAAMM guidance

The NAAMM guidance refers to static loads of vehicles. It describes the standard for load bearing bar thickness in comparison to span of the trench for each category of the vehicle. Therefore the NAAMM standard should prohibit longitudinal bow.

Longitudinal bow is a failure of the load bearing bar of trench drain grate structure. Traffic across the trench bends the load bearing bar between the steel angles, cracking the bar at its weak points where it touches the steel angle toe, and cracking the welds between the banding bar and the load bearing bar.
The sketch portrays the comparison between the straight load bearing bar and load bearing bar affected by longitudinal bow. The longitudinal bow causes material crack and weld crack.

We exceed the NAAMM standard by about 50% – 60% due to following reasons: heavier vehicles are driving on the trench than previously estimated, vehicles stop or turn on the trench, trench is located relatively close to the top or bottom of the ramp.

The vehicles entering the trench could become heavier since they carry more load or they carry a different load that is heavier. Also facilities purpose has changed and new heavier vehicles are entering the trench.

The stopping on the trench creates partial impact in the same direction as the static load aside of horizontal impact. Turning on the trenches causes twisting of load bearing bars and thicker bars tolerate much better twisting force.

The distance from the ramp is extremely important. Vehicles approaching the ramp and going off the ramp create additional impact on the trench in the same direction as the static load.

Why do MetalGrating place welds on both sides of load bearing bar at the banding bar

Lets look at the sketch that is self explanatory.

The one weld between load bearing bar and banding in the trench drain grate resist high elongation force. But a small crushing force can crack the weld, Therefore, placement of one weld between the load bearing bar and banding bar can be cracked by relatively small force coming from opposite side of the weld. Therefore placement of 2 welds on load bearing bar and banding eliminates this problem. JW Investrade Inc. for Metalgrating.ca, 2026, London
Two sketches portray the difference between one weld on load bearing bar and banding bar and two welds on both sides on load bearing bar and the banding bar. JW Investrade Inc. for Metalgrating.ca, 2026, London

By placing two welds on the load bearing bar at the banding bar we make our trench drain grate stronger to resist vehicular traffic going along the length of the trench. We call them anti-vibration welds. We weld these welds manually then we clean them manually and then we inspect them. The quality of these welds is incomparable to welds produced by robot. These large welds prohibit weld cracking in longitudinal bow and act against transverse bow making our banding bar more resistant to banding.

Considering that Trench Drain Grate panels are about 12 inches wide and about 36 inches long. Therefore the banding bars that are 36 inches long are three times longer than load bearing bars. Consequently, the banding bars play the crucial role in overall rigidity of the panel. Our banding bars are 1/8″, 3/16″ even 1/4″ thicker than load bearing bars.

Why Metalgrating installs so thick banding bars and welds crossbars to the bottom of trench drain grate ?

Strong banding bars and additional crossbars at the bottom of trench drain grate protect the panel against transverse bow that is a leading cause of:

  • twisting load bearing bars,
  • breaking the welds between load bearing bar and top crossbars,
  • breaking the welds between load bearing bar and banding bar
  • and finally, the trench drain grate panel collapse

Transverse bow is a failure of the banding bar in the trench drain grate. Without crossbars at the bottom of the panel. traffic along the trench bends the banding bar along its length. JW Investrade Inc. for Metalgrating.ca, 2026, London
The image portrays comparison for transverse bow failure of Trench Drain Grate made from welded bar grating. The transverse bow is evident for welded bar grating without bottom crossbars and with thin banding bar. The traverse bow is a failure of banding bar due to traffic along the trench. JW Investrade Inc. for Metalgrating.ca, 2026, London

The minor transverse bow are very common and shorten the utilization time of the panels a little bit but excessive transverse bow lids to twisting load bearing bars, breaking the welds between load bearing bars and top crossbars, and breaking the welds between load bearing bars and banding bar.

Welding crossbars at the bottom of the trench drain grate prohibits excessive transverse bow since the bottom crossbars stabilize the bottom of load bearing bars in trench drain grate. JW Investrade Inc. for Metalgrating.ca. 2026, London Ontario.
